The Chaperone - Book Review
This month's BlogHer Book Club book was an absolutely fabulous read. The Chaperone takes the reader back in time to the 1920s. Cora, the main character and housewife to a wealthy lawyer, decides somewhat abruptly to take on the endeavor of being a young girl's chaperone traveling to New York City to train to be a dancer. The young girl being the real life dancer, Louise Brooks.
Though this book is fictional, Laura Moriarty takes into account every last detail of this era. The bustling streets, the fashion, the theaters, even the detail painting in their New York apartment. That kind of imagery paints a gorgeous picture and keeps you sucked in.
If you like coming of age books say, like Sylvia Path's The Bell Jar, then The Chaperone is for YOU! Cora finally finds herself and learns that true happiness and joy really do exist in life, and along the way endures two world wars, the dust bowl, prohibition, women's voting rights, racism and more.
