The Rules of Inheritance - Book Review

This was a paid review for BlogHer Book Club, but the opinions expressed herein are my own.

I'm sure the thought has crossed all of our minds at least once in our lives.

Outliving our parents.

Life without them in this world would be a mess and downright hard. Inconceivable really.

My parents always know exactly what to say when I'm in need of a little clarity. And without them I'd be more than just lost. I'd be completely broken.

Suppose something did happen to them, I really don't know what I'd do. But, after reading Claire Bidwell Smith's memoir I admire people more and more who have outlived their parents and had to face the challenge of death. Dealing with the grief and keeping your soul intact is the most strenuous part, but Smith did just that.

Smith's memoir, The Rules of Inheritance, is heartbreaking and encouraging all wrapped up in one. Smith tells her story of losing both of her parents. She is honest and vulnerable throughout the entire book. She takes grief and the challenge of dealing with death at such a young age to a whole new level.

If I can take just a smidgen of Smith's courage from her experiences with death in The Rules of Inheritance then I can count myself a blessed human being.

This is a wonderfully written book.  If you're looking for your next read, this is it.

  1. Wow that sounds intense. I lost my Grandma a few months ago and my mom has been talking about the fact that even though she is in her 60's, it's weird for her to think that she doesn't have her mom and dad here anymore. (My Grandpa passed years ago) It makes me so sad for her. I'd like to read this, maybe it would be one to pass along to her. I can't imagine losing my parents either. Thanks for the recommendation.
