Small Talk

There's something about the simplicity of saying "hello", followed by "how are you?" Even if you know the response is likely to be a lonely "good." You never know where the conversation may lead.
Sunday night I was at the local grocery store picking up candy at the last minute because somehow it all disappeared, and I saw the same girl at the cash register that I've seen every time before. Her familiar face and quiet nature begged me to say hello.
Her face lit up like a kid on Christmas morning, and she smiled at me. Her attitude seemed to suggest that not many people ask her about her day. She was surprised. Though I didn't have many items to ring up, our conversation seemed to last as if I had the entire conveyor belt filled with groceries. I asked her how her day was and what she had planned for Halloween.
She told me that she would be working late and had to close the store. I remember trying to think of something clever or funny to say to her, but all I could come up with was "That sounds kind of fun! Well I hope you have a great night!" (lame, I know. I've never been a quick-think-on-my-feet-kind-of-girl. Lord knows I try, but I always end up thinking of something hilarious and witty only AFTER the situation).
Our conversation was cut short when she handed me my receipt. Small talk is not nearly appreciated anymore like it used to be. Don't be afraid to say hello. You never know, it might change someone's day!
Thanks for this thoughtful post! X

YOu look super cute
ReplyDeleteLookin' good! I always try to say hello or at least give a smile! :)
ReplyDeleteI too am bad at comebacks...I always think of something clever to say later haha. Ah well. We can work on that I guess? :p
you look adorable in your outfit...the boots are beyond hot and i agree that sometimes saying hello is the best way to brighten up someone' day!
ReplyDeleteCute outfit!
ReplyDeleteAnd you're right about how just asking someone "How are you?" can be so uplifting. My dad always tries to greet servers/waiters/waitresses/clerks/cashiers by name as a way of letting them know he recognizes them as people rather than just "servers". I really like that and I try to do it myself.
You're so right, Alisha! We never know... a little kindness really goes a long way in someone's day.
ReplyDeletep.s. I absolutely love your outfit and that bright scarf.... you're making me want to bust out my flannel shirt. Love fall!
Oh.... and I almost always think of a witty response after a situation always. I'm not often very quick to come up with a smart reply. (:
You just made her day! We actually had a guest lecturer at work yesterday talk to us about the art of small talk. Basically, the point of the lecture was "every encounter is an opportunity." I know she meant that in the business sense, but I think it also means it's an opportunity to make a new friend or just make someone else feel special for a minute.
ReplyDeletecute boots! sometimes i make the most awkward small talk! lol! oh well! i try!
ReplyDeleteYou look so pretty and fall-like! I love it! And I totally agree about the small talk thing...
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet post- I try to smile at people as I walk by or say hello- I think little gestures like that make all the difference! Great coloured scarf and I love the denim shirt. Looking forward to the blogger swap :)
ReplyDeleteLooking great girl! I was actually thinking about this today, most of time when I do say 'hello' to someone, especially in a grocery store, they aren't very friendly back! But sometimes someone does look happy when I ask how they are and it makes me smile! I wish that small talk was appreciated nowadays too!
ReplyDeletei love your boots.!!!
